How many smoke and heat alarms do I need?

It will depend on the size of your property, but the recommended ‘minimum’ is to have at least 1 smoke detector installed on every floor in your home, ideally on the ceiling in your hallway or landing.

It is generally best to avoid the kitchen, where it may be set off accidentally.

How often should you test a smoke alarm?

Suffolk Fire and Rescue recommend a test of the batteries in your smoke alarm once a week. This is usually very simple to do at a press of a button. All modern smoke detectors have a lifetime of 10 years.

Some smart smoke alarms and heat detectors such as the Google Nest smoke alrams, test themselves frequently, and report back to the Nest mobile App for additional piece of mind.
